Tips & Tricks image Tired of finding a mailbox filled with stuff you didn't ask for?

Junk mail wastes space and paper. The senders waste time looking for attention you don't have to give. That mail sits in a pile until you get around to throwing it away.

If we get busy and stop junk mail at the source, we don't merely stop these annoyances, we do a little something for the environment. Let's try to save some trees from filling our landfills, even if it's just a minuscule amount of paper. In the meantime, while the unwanted mail is still coming, set up a recycling bin near the front door for quick disposal.

Here are some of the most effective ways to stop junk mail.

- Remove your personal information from any county tax database.

- If you can locate a phone number, call and ask to be removed from their mailing list.

- Call 1.888.5.OPT OUT to stop credit card companies from sending solicitations.

- Avoid supplying your address for raffles, store reward cards, surveys and product warranty cards. If you do, indicate you don't want your info distributed or sold to other parties.

- Contact a professional service that will do all the work for you. Simple contact them with issues and they take it from there. Many are free.

- Place a sign on the mailbox: No Free Papers. These are the unsolicited advertisements and solicitations left in your mailbox, tucked in your door and thrown on the front step. It is illegal for anyone outside of the postal service to put things in your box.

- Conserve paper by having bills and statements sent to you electronically.

- Put incorrectly delivered mail back in the box with a bold RETURN TO SENDER message written on it.

- Report deaths to the Direct Marketing Association to stop receiving mail for the demised.

- Contact catalog companies and get them to remove you from their mailing lists.

- Always select the Do not want to receive special offers box.

- If you get multiple phone directories, trace the ones you don't want and opt out on their website.

Taking preventative and proactive measures will reduce the likelihood of junk mail. It will require patience and time, so be prepared.
